The comment came at him so fast that he didn't really have time to react in a rational and level headed manner.  Most people didn't say anything about Axel's tendency to have fire during class and, honestly, the sight of the glowing orange spark had gotten him so hypnotized (the teacher's endless droll about the importance of knowing division wasn't helping, either) that Axel wasn't even really part of the real world at the moment, and that's why he ended up reacting in the idiotic way that he did.
